Tipton Citizen's Police Academy
Over the past several years, America's police force has been in the headlines for a number of reasons.  With all of the focus on police, a lot of questions have come to the public consciousness in regards to police practices, procedures, and day to day reality.  The Tipton Police Department is hoping to answer some of these questions for local citizens by offering a Tipton Citizen's Police Academy.  The philosophy of the weekly classes offered to interested citizens, is to provide the public with a well-rounded perspective of modern law enforcement.
"The contact between most average citizens and the police is limited to traffic violations, tickets or warnings," says Sergeant Bradly Peck.  "We want to allow people experience and better understanding of everything we do as police officers, which is so much more than traffic enforcement.  We think the Citizen's Academy is a great way to share that with our community."
The Academy is scheduled to run every Wednesday evening between October 4, 2017 and December 13, 2017, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  It will include instruction and activities centered around a different aspect of law enforcement each week.  The topics will include emergency vehicle operations, use of force, firearms, juvenile crimes, jail, dispatch procedures, criminal investigations, fingerprinting, patrol tactics, report writing, domestic violence, building clearing and searches, OWI enforcement, Miranda training, and interview procedures.  Academy participants will get to experience training, practice procedures and discuss law enforcement policies in all of these areas over the ten- week course.  Classes will be led by Tipton police officers.  In addition, participants will complete at least two hours of ride-along time with The Tipton PD.
The cost for the Tipton Citizen's Police Academy is $25.00.  The fee will cover the cost of a polo shirt and class materials, including ammunition, for each participant.  Anyone with questions or interest in  joining the Academy should contact either Chief Lisa Kepford, Sgt. Bradly Peck or Konnie Daufeldt  by phone at (563) 886-2424 or by email at lkepford@tiptonpd.org, bpeck@tiptonpd.org, or kdaufeldt@tiptoniowa.org.
