Visitor Information

Whether Cedar County is your destination or you're just passing through on the way to somewhere else, Tipton has a number of attractions and amenities for visitors to enjoy. Be sure to take a look at the event calendar to coordinate your visit with one of our many community celebrations, such as 'Ridiculous Days' and the 'Old Fashioned Christmas', complete with a horse-drawn tour of lights!

* The 1903 Carnegie Library is an interesting historical attraction itself, but it houses a wonderful collection of 21 original Grant Wood charcoal and oil works. Depicting his distinct, signature agricultural style, these works were donated from the Leech estate. Works from Marvin Cone and other artists are on display as well. Learn more about the library here.

Tipton is home to a unique collection of beautifully restored Victorian homes. This one is on the corner of Mulberry St. and highway 130.* Tipton is home to a fabulous collection of fully restored Victorian-era homes. You would be hard-pressed to find a comperable collection in one place anywhere in Eastern Iowa. A driving tour route has been established, and printed guides are available at many downtown businesses as well as at the Tipton Community Development Office at 520 Cedar Street. An online guide is in the works.

* Be sure to visit the Kennedy Family Aquatic Center, a new addition to the community in 2005. Complete with indoor and outdoor pools, two water slides, a lazy river, and full concessions, it's a great place for a family to spend an afternoon. The Aquatic Center is located in City Park on Plum Street.

* The brand new Cedar County Historical Society Museum, officially dedicated in November 2006, features thousands of historical artifacts, photos, and documents from all over the county. Learn about the early settlers of this area, the infamous "Cow Wars", and much more! Call 563-886-2899 for museum hours and special displays. The Museum is on the north side of town, near the Wal-Mart on highway 38.

* The Old Cedar County Jail was used continuously from 1892 until 2001. It is probably the last "Mom & Pop" jail still standing in Iowa and possibly the nation. This facility, located one block west of the Courthouse square in Tipton, consists of the jail and the Sheriff's house, which was built in 1855. The jail and residence was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Cedar County Friends of Historic Preservation manages the facility and is working on an Iowa Law Enforcement museum at the site. Take a stroll through the jail and get the unique experience of early prisoners.

* Tipton's downtown business district plays host to an array of unique local shopping opportunities for visitors as well as Tipton residents. Whether you're on the lookout for gifts, sporting apparel, fine dress wear, or pieces created by local artisans, give downtown Tipton a visit.
